Merino wool

Warm and tactile

Merino wool garments are a staple in every 12 STOREEZ collection. In winter, we offer roomy jumpers, sweaters, matching sets, and accessories. In summer, you'll find lightweight tops and fine T-shirts that will make you feel comfortable even in hot weather.

Merino sheep

For centuries in medieval Spain, they developed a new breed of sheep with exceptionally soft, light, and warm wool. From spring to autumn, the sheep grazed in the Pyrenees, and as winter approached, they were herded south along narrow paths.

During those times, merino wool was worn by kings, and the breed's secret was kept strictly confidential, passed down from father to son. That is until Spanish colonists, along with the animals, found themselves on semi-arid pastures in Australia. Today, the wool of Australian merino sheep is one of the best in the world.

Nurtured by nature

In early spring, merino sheep almost 'drown' in creamy-white wool. Once a year, at a strictly defined time, the sheep are carefully sheared — by summer, their wool will grow back to protect the sheep from the blazing sun.

Each hair is coated with natural wax — lanolin, which prevents moisture from penetrating deep into the fibres. Even finished garments made from merino wool still have this natural coating, which is why it is often used for sportswear and underwear.

The quality of the fleece depends not only on the nutrition and well-being of the animals, humidity, or wind strength but also on where exactly the wool is sheared from. The softer, lighter, and finer it is, the more valuable it becomes.

Combed or carded?

Merino wool yarn can be combed or carded, depending on the thickness and length of the fibres. Each type has its advantages.

Combed yarn is made from long fibers thoroughly combed and tightly twisted. This results in smooth, silky threads that do not itch or pill, making them perfect for snug turtlenecks, delicate jumpers, and flowing knits.

Carded yarn, on the other hand, is crafted from short and porous fibers, producing a fluffy and airy texture. This type of yarn is excellent for creating warm yet lightweight garments, such as loose-fitting jumpers and cosy winter sets.

Merino wool at 12 STOREEZ

The factory we partner with implements Italian manufacturing techniques and works with Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren. Our longstanding partnership has evolved into a friendship, with the factory often suggesting improvements to our products. For instance, we used the Easy Care treatment for our turtlenecks in the Autumn 2023 collection which helps the garment retain its shape after machine washing.

Merino wool blends well with other fibres, serving as a sturdy and versatile base for silk, cashmere, or cotton. In the current 12 STOREEZ collection, we offer nine yarn types, many of which have become favourites among our customers.
